Cloverfield Attacks Australia May 22

The promote the May 22nd release of Cloverfield in Australia, these new "viral" videos have appeared, depicting a Cloverfield attack on Sydney. If you watch (or listen) closely, you will notice some subtle DVD product placement.

Watch them all online at IGN.com, or you can download the hi-res Quicktime videos here:

* Thanks to Andrew I and Tony P for emailing me about these!

  2. Is the DVD mentioned (verbally or visually) in all six of the videos? I found the "News Report" one (scrolling across the bottom), and the "Car Radio" one (when they switch from music to news). Do the others have some mention?

  3. Oh, just found the "Emergency Broadcast System" one - the DVD is on the desk. I'm blind :D
It's seen in the last picture on the Cloverfieldclues post.

  4. 2 of the people in the videos both talked about going to Melvin or some place like that. Is that a popular place to go in Australia? Maybe we should check it out. Also on the News Broadcast, it said Swans 87, Tigers 36, could it be coordinates, could be nothing, Swan tho does have to do with Lost. Okay im done. lol. Also Cloverfield was released in April no May. So, what are they advertising? Probably the release of the Blu-Ray Cloverfield is my guess, or the release of Cloverfield in Australia.

You need Quicktime to watch the downloads, or go to the IGN link to watch them online.

Matthew said... the release of Cloverfield in Australia.

    Yes.

  6. Whoa! they went pretty far to advertise Cloverfield in Australia. But that is some really cool junk they made there! Does this mean that the monster also attacks Sydney which means that its still alive? Or is it just an advertisement?

    "On Holiday"
I first thought it looked like a tentacle that dragged the far off ship under water but after I look at it more, it look more like It's tail because if it were a tentacle, you would see more then one and we all know that the monster doesn't have tentacles.

    "News Report"
The news tape advertises the Cloverfield DVD release. You can't really see much on this one. you see a black shape under water and a lot of little white one. to me, this silhouette looks nothing like Clover. The news lady talks about earthquakes that have been happening but that’s more likely to be Clover stomping around.

    "Car Radio"
Well, the radio advertises the Cloverfield DVD release and the there's a news report about what seems to be a terrorist attack and the the guy goes "Oh, sh**" which is weird because when the lady turns the camera you see nothing to go "Oh, sh**" to. Its like he said it early when he should have said it when that something crashes through the building.

    "Subway Scare"
Freak, why does he have to keep the camera on him like the whole time in till the very end! When he turns the camera down to fix something, the camera shows a magazine that says "Japanese Oil Rig Destroyed" which to anyone who fallows the ARG know that its talking about the Taguato attack. During the whole time this guys is talking to the camera, there's someone talking over the intercom system and then you hear the parasites and the guys screaming through the intercom and guy with camera freaks out and when he gets out of the train you see for a split second a parasite that jumps on the train and then jumps out of site, probably on the guy and you see a spark from the ceiling and boom, nothing else.

    "Under Attack"
This one was probably films on a camera phone because there's no date and time on the bottom corner like the other hand-held camera footage. You really cant make anything out just a bunch of screaming and roaring from Clover.

    "Emergency Broadcast System"
I wonder why it was a test of the emergency broadcast system when it was a real emergency. In this apparent you see the Cloverfield DVD on the left of the screen which could be another advertisement for it and you can see luggage bags everywhere. So these people could have been trying to evacuate, maybe. You then see explosions in the background and fighter jets trying to bomb Clover and you hear him stomping and roaring around really close and then it looks like the apartment was bombed or attack my Clover.

  7. If these are viral videos, then something's wrong. I heard sounds that I can only assume were made by whatever was attacking, but they weren't those of the Cloverfield monster or the parasites. Something's up. Either this is just some spoof they came up with, or they've got a new idea... maybe a new monster.

I just wish i could read more of the ad on the subway ....

  9. Something I just noticed in the article about the rig...notice the spelling on the last line. "phsycological". I guess it could be one of those things where another country spells it different than the US but if not...then that is very strange.

  10. Hey did anyone notice how craptacular the FX were? I love Cloverfied and the whole ARG but these look way too ameteur. Whe the ship goes down in "On Holiday" the splash clearly recedes back to where the ship was and it even disappears like a mist, not like falling water. Then on "Emergency Broadcast System", THE CAT IS SEE-THROUGH! I dunno this stuff seems like it was put together at the lst minute. Oh, and i think that in "News Report", it's a whale. The reporter is just paranoid.

  11. I think these may just be advertising the Cloverfield DVD for Australia - not talking about a new attack or something like that.

  12. Those were pretty lame.
    That's all.

i think this is just an advertisement to the dvd release in australia, but i think it's cool that they have some viral tie-ins ... i doubt it hits sydney. it was odd that they mentioned earthquakes in new york and all that ...

i also thought it was worth noting that they described the attack on sydney as a "terrorist attack". this could be a clue as to how the government might possibly cover up the monster attack on new york. it seems ridiculous to assume that they would be able to fool us americans into thinking that, but if it REALLY DID HAPPEN, which story do you think the majority of us not in new york would find easier to believe?

  14. I put these up on the CMF YouTube channel (won't link without permission out of respect for CloverfieldClues, but they should be easy to find), and of course gave you credit, Dennis.

  15. the monsters dont sound or look any thing like the movies

  16. cloverfield and lost are not cinnected my ass then why have the monster attack sydney and isnt that where oceanic flight 815 took off at as well just something to think about my fellow cloverheads!!

  17. Some of them were stupid while some were kinda awesome. On holiday was the most stupid (she didn't even notice the freakin' ship) while Emergency Broadcast System was the most awesome. Subway Scare was only okay because the guy fixed the camera to his face the whole time.

Yes the effects are amateur but that is because it was more last minute-ish. They didn't use their 15-million dollar budget stuff on this of course because if they did on very short vids than that would be kinda stupid. That is why the effects are kinda suckish.

In other news, i definitely think that this is for advertising. The DVD is in all of them and the effects are sub-par.

But there MIGHT (emphasis on might) be some connections to the actual ARG...do you think that this is another monster?...Probably not but we can never be too sure with all the crazy sh*t that JJ always pulls on us!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Did J.j. and reeves and whatever people run the ARG have anything to do with this or is this simply just the Aussie's messin around a bit?

    ReplyDelete
  19. here's my thoughts on the whole thing ...

yes, they're pretty cheesy ... seems like just a fan-based thing and not part of the ARG. but keep in mind there are fans of both the movie and the ARG worldwide. these videos will have references to both but are strictly for promoting the release of the dvd.

take em at face value ... the important points i pulled were things like the reference to the seismic activity, the oil rig, the boat or whatever going down ... other than that, i doubt the sequel will be clover eats sydney, or that there will be a second monster that attacks the aussie's ... remember, this was intended as an american monster of the likes of godzilla and such ... and no, i'm not saying that clover is the black sheep of the godzilla family, only that jj said something along the lines of the toy monsters in japan being somewhat of an inspiration (please correct me if i'm wrong, i have the attention span of a three year old sometimes ...)

  20. "Did J.j. and reeves and whatever people run the ARG have anything to do with this or is this simply just the Aussie's messin around a bit?"

Reeves doesn't even have anything to do with the viral in the first place. These were probably released by the marketing team in order to promote the DVD release in Australia, which makes them official, but doesn't make them in-game.

  21. You know what I think? In addition to promoting the Cloverfield in Australia, I think this is also may be a way to clear up the timeline issues a lot of us here on Cloverfieldclues were arguing about during the whole sub-photo thing. The news coverage clearly says May 22, 2008. 2008. Obviously, Clover couldn't have been in two places and so the footage itself is no more than advertising...but still, May 22nd 2008...it says it right there

  22. This guys of ign.com are the same who made the fake zelda's movie trailer, this videos were made by their own, so these are not part of the official campaign of the movie.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Cloverfield Minus a Budget equals these videos.

    Terrible.

    ReplyDelete
  24. If this had been for the viral marketing, it would have been terrible. But since it's just a DVD release, it's neat. Funny. Unique. Better than showing a bunch of movie clips and saying 'buy it now' - like most every other DVD release.

But these most likely aren't part of the viral marketing, even though they make mention of some aspects (oil rig, ect).

    ReplyDelete
  25. .. It's still very strange. The film is all about the attack in NEW YORK. Why do a all these films about a attack on sydney, that didn't happen in the film.

Yeahyeah .. to PROMOTE the film in Sydney, but it still very strange.

'Bad Robot' has made a misstake indeed.

  26. Is it just me, or does the thing hitting the building in "Car Radio" seem to be implied to be the thing that was launched out of the water in "On Holiday"?

    ReplyDelete
  27. AHHHHHHHHHHHHH I'm Scared I'm From Aus!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Yo.
I'm Australian. Cloverfield is released on DVD here on May 22nd.

These ads haven't appeared on TV or anything here, so I am to postulate that they are official low-budget advertisements that are directed at Australians (like myself) who have been following the internet ARG since the beginning.

The Sydney Swans and The Richmond Tigers are both Australian Football League (AFL) teams, and it looks like the Swans will be kicking some ass! he he.

We spell 'psychological' just like in America, so these videos must be VERY low budget to have been finalised with a spelling error like that. (P.S. In Australia, we spell 'finalised' with an 's' and not a 'z'. he he)

The people in the videos are saying they are going to Melbourne. Australians pronounce it 'Mel-burn' whereas Americans are used to hearing 'Mel-born' - this is why you seem unsure on what they are saying.

    Any more cross-cultural questions? I'm all-ears!

  29. Oh. P.S. I also doubt that they are IG. Official, yes, but not IG.

I really doubt that Bad Robot had anything to do with these HACK videos

  32. Ok so I think these videos help with the two monster idea.
The video with the girl on holiday there is a black ufo that shoots across the sky at around 0:13 right at the rig or what ever is going down. Any ideas?
For the video with the reporter the line/shape of the monster is different then Clover. Also clover never shot water into the air like this one does. Also it appears to be smaller then Clover. Could this be the baby that everyone talks about? Also it takes a good 3-4 seconds for it to pass behind the reporter. Why so long?
The third video that bother me were the parasites that attack the subway. They look completely different then the ones in the movie. I have put together a small site with arrows that show all these things because I don't know how to do that over here. Anyway hope these things can help figure out more things.
Thanks to look at my little site goto http://web.mac.com/moulson1313/Site/Movie.html

  33. All it says is monster attacks, clover isnt the monster attacking sydney. They are pretty cool, but yeah, really crap special effects, which is understanable, seen as though they arent official. Then again, i remember thinking the chuai station special effects were quite rubbish...

    ReplyDelete
  34. "Oh. P.S. I also doubt that they are IG. Official, yes, but not IG"

Ditto. Just because they're not in-game doesn't mean the marketing team had nothing to do with them.

"Cloverfield Minus a Budget equals these videos.

    Terrible."

It's just advertising and is no worse than the Chaui Station video. People have got to stop complaining about such little inconsequential BS.

The Australian release date for the DVD is May 22, that's why they used that date. It's the same reason all the viral marketing pre-movie said 1-18-08, because they were promoting the release date of the movie.

  35. Is it just me or if you notice in On Holiday, there was a black thing that went so frickin fast?

    ReplyDelete
  36. I don't want anyone to think I'm complaining, I just wanted to point out some small differences. What about the two monster theory? Do you think its possible. Also is it possible that Australia could be the location for #2?

    ReplyDelete
  37. One more random stupid question. What does ARG stand for?

    ReplyDelete
  38. ARG stands for Alternate Reality Game. Basically, it is shorthand for the viral marketing surrounding Cloverfield that we have been following since July. Strictly speaking, the Cloverfield ARG wasn't much of a "game", like say The Lost Experience or Find815, so you may see some people call it an Alternate Reality Experience , or simply just viral marketing.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Ok these ppl need to stop with the crappish effects rants. That is only because they didn't use their, budget (Like the Chuai vids but less scary).

In regards to that black, really fast thing everyone is mentioning, It might be a UFO that has a monster and drops it. But that would be kinda stupid since we all know the real one came from the ocean. BUT!!...It would probably be a fighter plane that is crashing (which explains the black dot thing).

BUT I STILL DON'T THINK THIS IS PART OF THE ARG...Has some neat tie-ins but not the real deal...

    ReplyDelete
  40. move along people. nothing to see here. nothing but some shitty fakes.

    ReplyDelete
  41. this is probably a long shot, but the magazine article on the seat of the train....aladygma?

  42. Jest Serdinpity said... I don't want anyone to think I'm complaining, I just wanted to point out some small differences. What about the two monster theory? Do you think its possible. Also is it possible that Australia could be the location for #2?

It's not complaining - it's bringing up valid points. Let's say there are two (or more!!??) monsters deep down in some ocean trench where Clovies sleep and live. (For more on the 'ocean trench is hiding some monster, see the Meg series by Steve Alten). Why did they wake up and come to the surface? Probably the deep-sea drilling. Or, if you go with the theory that Tagruato/somebody is controlling the monster somehow, or was experimenting and it escaped to wreck havoc... still Tagruato/deep sea drilling are connected to the monster.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I agree with Griffin on the fact that the drilling is related to the Clover (Not the scariest monster name ever but who the hell cares).

The closest staion to Sydney is the Sujin Station and for those of you who watch LOST, it kinda sounded like the characters Sun and Jin mixed into Sujin (i only pointing it out because it is interesting I DO NOT BELIEVE LOST AND CLOVERFIELD ARE CONNECTED) but it is kinda weird that the Oceanic Flight 815 did come from Sydney. This is either just a reference or it is shit (most probably shit).

In other news, I have a vid on the Where were u when the monster hit CONTEST. Watch it and check it out!
