EW Interview With JJ Abrams on 10 Cloverfield Lane

Entertainment Weekly has an interview with JJ Abrams about 10 Cloverfield Lane.

In the interview, Abrams explains how the new movie is connected to the original, and how it will be different.

In particular, he reveals that the LSA (Large Scale Aggressor) monster from Cloverfield will not be in the new movie, but there will other monsters:
There is a monster in this movie. It’s not the monster you expect, but there is a monster. The thing that I will say about anyone who is going to it expecting to see literally Cloverfield 2, those characters and that monster are not in this movie, but there are other characters and other monsters.
He also explains that the scenes for the trailer were shot first, just like the first movie, so the movie could be released in a short time frame:
We thought, “When was the last time a movie drops a trailer for a title that no one had heard of two months before the movie is to be release?” Not often. We thought that was fun ... Literally, my pitch to Brad Grey on that was to start by shooting the trailer first, which we did.

This movie felt like we had an opportunity to do something that was similar, surprise the hell out of people.
Abrams hints that if things go well, a third movie could eventually be made (hopefully not in another 8 years...)
I would be lying if I didn’t say there was something else that, if we’re lucky enough to do it, could be really cool that connects some stories... This is just this movie, and it’s only two films that we’re talking about right now. There is something else that we’d like to do, and hopefully we’ll get a shot.

  1. So I'm officially worried that the monster is going to be "paranoia" or "society." Ughhhh...

    1. I pray that it isn't a stereotypical lesson on morals. That'd kill my anticipation and interest in the Cloverfield franchise.

  2. He says there are monsters....Something tells me that mutated Pig will definitely be in this film. Its starting to look like an "Alien" film that takes place on earth.

  3. I just hope the monsters are similar to Clover. One reason why i liked the first film so much is purely because of the monster's size and how it could easily knock over something as large as a skyscraper with little effort. If "Monster" ends up being a metaphor for something other than an actual huge creature knocking shit over, i'll be honestly bummed out. But from the clip from the trailer showing a light and roar coming from behind the farmhouse, i'm confident we won't be let down.

  4. I know what you mean. I'd be a little disappointed if monsters come in many forms only referred to howard being a crazy dude. but, judging by the super bowl trailer, we probably won't be let down by whatever the hell that thing that lights up the house is. the audio recording mentioned red light coming from everywhere, which is weird, because the lights on the whateverthefuckitis are blue. although its a bit cliché, im hoping it's alien of some kind. worst case scenario it actually is a chemical attack, although, knowing jj, it's probably something totally awesome that we won't see coming. that's why I loved cloverfield and super 8 so much.
