Waking Clovie: Recent Updates on 4th Installment & Slusho Website

 We are back! There has been enough recent news that it was worth of bringing the blog back...

First off, original director Matt Reeves has confirmed that a fourth installment of the Cloverfield franchise is in the works, serving as a sequel to the first Cloverfield movie. Sources told Deadline that director Babak Anvari and writer Joe Barton are attached to the project, with J.J. Abrams producing alongside Hannah Minghella and Jon Cohen while Bryan Burk, Matt Reeves, and Drew Goddard are executive producing. The current WGA writers strike is most likely causing this project to be on hold until that dispute is settled.

In addition to the movie news, a new trademark for Slusho! was filed on March 1st of this year. You can find the details of the filing at the bottom of this page: https://trademarks.justia.com/owners/bold-futura-llc-1432956/

Lastly, a new website at slusho.com was recently discovered by reddit user /u/EliteFreakozoid over at /r/Cloververse on April 4th. While it hasn't been confirmed as an official site, the fact that it was registered around the same time as the original slusho.jp has given fans hope. Be sure to join the subreddit and the discord to stay up-to-date on the latest rumors and theories.

While these updates are exciting, we want to keep expectations managed. We don't have too many details about the upcoming movie just yet, and the Slusho website may not be official. However, we'll be sure to keep you posted as more information unfolds.

Cloverfield Rumors - DVDs

There are a lot of Cloverfield rumors floating around the lazysphere lately, and while I don't normally like to promote pure speculation, and in some cases wishful thinking, there are some things that maybe we can clarify.

There are actually several rumors floating around regarding the Cloverfield DVD release - specifically regarding the release dates, formats, and extras.

I've heard two supposed release dates for Cloverfield - April 15^th or the 22^nd, although there has been no official word. Logically, that time frame seems about right, since I Am Legend opened about a month before Cloverfield, and its release date will be on March 18^th. VideoETA is estimating April, but won't announce an official date until the 18^th.

FWIW, Cloverfield won't even been released in Japan until April 5^th. Looking again at I Am Legend, Japan was its second highest foreign box office, pulling in over $40 million. I think the 'American Godzilla' might do well enough in Japan to not want a DVD release a week or two later.

There are a few wrenches of the monkey variety that could also cause a delayed release. First, Paramount was until recently in the HD-DVD camp, and while they have recently canceled all new HD-DVD releases (including Sweeney Todd and There Will Be Blood), they are not expected to release any Blu-Ray movies until the Summer. I don't know whether it makes more sense to:

• Release the movie without Blu-ray, then release a 'complete' Blu-ray version later
• Release the movie with a stripped down Blu-ray version now, then re-release an enhanced version later (known as 'double-dipping')
  
• Delay the release date until both formats are ready to go

Another wrinkle in the Cloverfield raisin is the question of the bonus extras, specifically what would have been included on the HD-DVD version, and now may or may not make their way on to a rushed Blu-ray release. The tagruato.blogspot.com fan site posted an 'anonymous' letter that claims the extras may in fact get scrapped. This 'news' is already getting some play on bigger sites, so if anything, lets hope this 'leak' prevents that from happening.

UPDATE: I just received an email from Paramount promoting their final two HD-DVD releases, and the standard-DVD only release of Sweeny Todd. So, it look like we will probably get a standard DVD release for Cloverfield next month, then hopefully an HD sometime in the summer.

Paramount Cease and Desist

I received a Cease and Desist email from Paramount today. :)

Paramount has learned that you are reproducing, displaying and distributing the “Cheese” call sheet on your website
...
Paramount hereby demands that you immediately remove the “Cheese” call sheet from your website.


The funny thing is, I haven't even read the call sheet, let alone posted it here. I only posted a link to the story in NY Magazine. I guess they didn't bother to actually look at my blog! LOL

I guess this means the call sheet was authentic. I'm glad I didn't read it!

BTW, I just checked NY Magazine, and they still have it posted up.

UPDATE: I talked to the lawyer who represents Paramount, and he was a really nice guy. The C&D letter is definitely legitimate, but he wouldn't comment on the call sheet. BTW, Slashfilm also received the same letter.
