'True' Cloverfield Sequel is in the works

via Comicbook

We've waited ten years. It may be finally happening.

CinemaCon has brought us more news than Overlord's departure as fourth film in the Cloverfield Universe.

Paramount and JJ Abrams have confirmed that they are finally 'developing a true, dedicated Cloverfield sequel.' This was announced after Overlord was confirmed to NOT be the fourth film in the franchise. Abrams has said that this film is coming 'very soon' to theatres, but with no clear release date or official press for the film so far, we don't know when. The theatre release for this 4th instalment is in stark contrast to the previous entry in the series, The Cloverfield Paradox, which had a direct to Netflix release straight after the Super Bowl in early February this year.

But what should we expect from this 'true sequel'? While the plot is only to be speculated, we can only guess that the Cloverfield monster will make an appearance again. Whether or not we will see the fate of our original characters (including Beth, Rob and Lily), we will have to wait and see.

Overlord is not Cloverfield 4

Official Overlord photo, unveiled at CinemaCon.

JJ Abram's comments at CinemaCon have confirmed that the aforementioned film 'Overlord' is NOT the fourth film in the Cloverfield Universe. This comes after Abrams unveiled footage for the WWII horror/thriller, including revealing the film to be R rated. This will be Bad Robot's first R-Rated Feature. Vulture has quoted JJ's thoughts on the matter:

"Because it is R-rated, I can describe it as bats**t crazy," Abrams said. "It is a crazy sci-fi, action, horror film that takes place in World War II, directed by Julius Avery. It is super fun. We're really excited about it."

The filmmaker was quick to qualify: "It's not a Cloverfield movie. We are developing a true, dedicated Cloverfield movie soon."- (via Vulture.com)

In terms of the reason why Overlord has been pulled from the Cloverfield Universe we can only speculate, however many fans have linked it to the critical outcome of the previous film in the series, The Cloverfield Paradox. While this remains unconfirmed, it may play a factor in Bad Robot's decision.

Overlord is set to hit theatres on October 26th, and stars Jovan Adepo, Jacob Anderson, Pilou Asbæk, Iain De Caestecker, John Magaro, Wyatt Russell and Bokeem Woodbine.

Happy 10th Birthday 1-18-08

This January marks the 10 year anniversary of the release of Cloverfield on January 18th, 2008.

In terms of the A.R.G, it's been over ten years since the original trailer premiered and viral marketing sites like 1-18-08*, Tagruato, Slusho, TidoWave were found. Who knew that we would still be anticipating the third film 10 years later?

10 Cloverfield Lane came as a pleasant surprise in early 2016, sporting another Alternate Reality Game, 8 years after the first film in the Cloververse. Hopefully the 're-branding' of the Cloververse as an anthology series means we can expect more original films in the future, under the umbrella of the Cloverfield name. As JJ Abrams stated in an interview with Vanity Fair:

"It's like Cloverfield is the amusement park, and each of these movies is a different ride in that park."

After the past entries in the Cloververse, it's exciting to anticipate what the future of the series will hold, especially with the plans that JJ Abrams has for the Cloververse.

So here's a thank you to all the blog-readers, Unfictioners, Redditors and internet-scavengers that have been here from the beginning, for 10 long years. Here's to anyone who has joined along the way. And here's to anyone who will find us in the future. Welcome to the world of Cloverfield... and always remember:

It's a lion, and it's huge.

Happy 1-18-18.

*The link above is to our mirror of the original 1-18-08 site. DO NOT go to the original 1-18-08 website anymore. The domain expired and is no longer controlled by Paramount, and someone else snatched it up to run ads with malware.

The Last Scene of the Original Cloverfield Movie: Splashdown

On the Blu-ray & DVD versions of Cloverfield, you can clearly see "some thing" falling from the sky and into the ocean in the very last scene of the movie.

During the Cloverfield ARG, we were told that this was a piece of the Japanese "ChimpanzIII" satellite. However, just like the Chuai "oil drilling" station, this was probably a cover story by Tagruato to cover up something much bigger.

NOTE: Be sure to set the video to HD quality and view it full screen.

I have plotted the trajectory of the splashdown so you know where to look:

Bad Robot Art Show at Gallery 1988

Gallery 1988 - the gallery that brought you the Fringe Benefits Project - had a new show on Friday to celebrate Bad Robot.

The "art experience" featured works inspired by J.J. Abrams' creations, including LOSTFRINGE, Star Trek, Super 8, Revolution, Alias, Felicity, and of course Cloverfield.

There was a lot of great Cloverfield art work, many of which is still available for sale at Gallery1988.com

Matt Reeves on Cloverfield Sequel: "You are going to see it"

Total Film recently caught up with Matt Reeves and interviewed him about the status of Cloverfield 2:
We asked the Cloverfield and Let Me In director what was going on with Cloverfield 2, and he told us: "Well, you are going to see it - we just don't know when [laughs]."

"At the moment we are talking about the story quite a lot. Drew Goddard, who wrote the original, is going to pen the sequel and JJ Abrams is very much involved.

"However, the three of us have been so busy that getting the right idea together has been taking a long time."

But will the sequel shoot in real-time again? "You see, that's a difficult part: we want it to be shot like the first but how can you continue that idea successfully for a second time?

"We have a lot of affection for the original and the sequel can't just be the same thing. But that is tricky when you need to have a monster destroying stuff once again."
We've heard a similar story before... do you think this sounds like it might actually happen someday?

Matt Reeves Won't Close The Door On Cloverfield Sequel

During his promotion of Let Me In, Cloverfield director Matt Reeves was recently asked by Collider and MTV if there will ever be a Cloverfield sequel, and he continues to give the same old story: they are still interested in making a sequel... "it's a priority". Just not anytime soon however, as both Reeves' and J.J. Abrams' plates are pretty full right now. Of course, that's exactly what you would expect them to say if they wanted it to be a surprise...!

FYI, Fast forward the video to 12:35 to get to the Cloverfield discussion.

JJ Abrams and Matt Reeves Keep Hope Alive for Cloverfield Sequel

In two separate interviews, MTV has tried to get to the bottom of the possibility of a Cloverfield sequel. True to form, neither J.J. Abrams nor Matt Reeves will commit to anything. But here we are over two years later, and they still are not dismissing the idea either. They are keeping with the same story since the movie was released, namely, "we have a few ideas we're kicking around".

Would you still like to see a sequel? Or how about a prequel?

Fan Made Cloverfield Videos

Last month, a fan-made Cloverfield video began making the rounds and picking up a little bit of "I don't think this is real, but..." coverage. We don't normally cover fake news, but yesterday, the second video from abcharu21 was released. This doesn't make it any more legitimate, but it does mean I will get a ton more emails wondering why I haven't posted these. So without further ado, I present to you "new" Cloverfield videos:

BTW, if you are looking for something real to do, there is an interesting Art ARG going on for LOST Season 6 at damoncarltonandapolarbear.com. The great folks at LOSTARGs.com have been following everything if you want to get all caught up.

Slusho! Themed Star Trek Enterprise

Slusho themed Star Trek Enterprise
The official Star Trek website has a new section - The Enterprise Project - featuring models of NCC-1701 redecorated by various artists. One of the most interesting is Enterprise #12, the Slusho! theme by Bad Robot artist and animator Amy Vatanakul. All of the great Slusho! memes are represented, the Seabed Nectar, the Sword logo, "You Can't Drink Just Six", and of course all the fun Slusho! peope and critters. Nice work Amy!

Slusho! To Make Apperance In Fringe?

Fringe's John Noble and Anna Torv filming in NYC with a Slusho!J.J. Abrams' sci-fi thriller FRINGE was shooting in NYC this weekend, and SmokeInTheCity captured this photo of John Noble drinking a Slusho!

Is this just some behind the scenes antics, or will the magical drink make an appearance in the show?

The Fringe episode being filmed is The Road Not Taken, which will air May 5th on FOX.

[source: FringeTelevision.com]

FYI, Slusho! made several appearances in Heroes, thanks to J.J. Abrams' friend Greg Grunberg.

Michael Giacchino's Roar at The Oscars

Michael Giacchino's "Roar" from Cloverfield was played as background music while Will Smith presented the award for Visual Effects. The AMPAS, still stuck in the 90s, does not have video available, but check out this clip from YouTube...

Cloverfield's Tagruato in Star Trek Superbowl Commercial

J.J. Abrams dropped another nod to Cloverfield in the latest Star Trek commercial seen during the Superbowl*. The Tagruato logo can be seen on one of the buildings, while J.J. Abrams' name flashes on the screen.

This is the second Cloverfield / Star Trek crossover. We reported earlier that Cloverfield's Slusho! will also be making an appearance in the movie.

Thanks to Evan, Marcus, and Matthew for emailing me about this!

* That's right, I said Superbowl, and not "The Big Game"! Superbowl. Superbowl. Superbowl. Suck it NFL!

In Japan, there is a novelization book of the Cloverfield screenplay. Unfortunately, it is only available in Japanese.

The good news is that Unfiction's Kosmopol - who speaks Japanese, English, and German - picked up a copy while visitng Japan, and will be posting photos and analysis of the content.

If you speak German, you can read about it on Kosmopol's blog here.

Cloverfield's Slusho In Star Trek

MTV Interviewed J.J. Abrams about Star Trek, and they revealed that Slusho! will be making an appearance in the upcoming movie!
MTV: I couldn't help but notice the Slusho! reference from "Cloverfield" in the bar scene where Kirk first meets Uhura. Will we see other J.J.-isms peppered throughout the film?

J.J. Abrams: No. That was sort of the only one, and it was just sort of a goof.
I09 reports that a monster similar to Cloverfield also appears in the trailer. Could it be Clover's long lost relative?
