Monsters

Here are some of the possibilities for what the monster might be:

GODZILLA

Sony owns the movie rights to Godzilla, not Paramount, and according to Wikipedia: Toho has decided to retire the franchise for a period of 5-10 years
, possibly returning with a new film in 2013 or 2014.

Check out this sound comparison of the Cloverfield monster, Godzilla, and a T-Rex (@ 2:20):

VOLTRON

There is a line in the trailer "It's alive" that some people think is "It's a Lion". Voltron is a giant mecha robot, composed of 5 robot lions. Voltron was a "defender of the universe", so why would he be attacking New York? Also, according to IMDB, a Voltron movie is already being made by someone else.

CTHULHU

Pronounced KUH-THOO-LOO (I know I said it wrong on the podcast)

A fictional monster created by horror author H. P. Lovecraft. It is often cited for the extreme descriptions given of its appearance, size, and the abject terror that it invokes. Cthulhu first appeared in the short story "The Call of Cthulhu". Also, inspired the song
The Call Of Ktulu by Metallica.

GAMERA

Giant, flying, fire-breathing turtle from Japan.

CHIMERA

From Greek mythology, another flying, fire-breathing creature, with 3 heads - lion, goat, and dragon.

LEVIATHAN

From the Bible, a giant fire breathing sea creature.

THE SMOKE MONSTER

From Lost.

TOBIAS FÜNKE

He already destroyed Tiny Town, why not New York next?

  2. I subscribe to the Tobias theory. It's either that, or Rosanne Barr.

  3. Quote directly from the "Call Of Chtuhlu" story - "March 1st - or February 28th according to the International Date Line - the earthquake and storm had come."

In the trailer there is an earthquake and a storm.

  4. Great list Dennis. I love Gamera, he's like a giant flying Ninja Turtle run amok.

  5. Hey Dennis,

I came across an interesting theory involving the Freemasons. I sent it to your e-mail, but you said you don't check it much so I thought I would leave a comment. Check it out if you get a chance.

  6. On second thought... maybe it's a Polar Bear.

  7. well, i'm kinda joking, but i've been saying for a week or so that it's SMOKEY!!! hahahaha

    hey, who knows?

actually, I also half joked that the hatch (and button) was used to actually not just contain an electromagnetic surge, but it was also holding closed......a dimensional rift!!

and when it was finally destroyed, the rift was left open, letting out demons (monsters) or whatever.

this is pretty long for a half-joke kinda' theory, but hey. we have time to make up stuff right now, right?

    hahahaha.

  8. Hey Loc... ooops ... hey cloves,

I don't know if this has been mentioned yet and it is probably just smoke, but there appears to be a face in betwen the lights, looking down the street, in picture #58 of the screen caps. I could just be reading in to things... lol ... But I see it.

  9. I apologize in advance for the length of this post, but I think it may have some crucial info:

Ok, here is a lead I found that no one seems interested in looking into but it seems like pretty critical stuff so...hear me out. This is in regards to the 1-18-08 movie, not the Haas stuff...I know, sue me

    Here it goes,
I found this on a website the other day, I admit I have not looked into this element myself so if anyone else could substantiate this first part I would really appreciate it.

"One odd little factor is that the movie seems to have some kind of connection with Freemasonry. The “Cloverfield” website, 1-18-08.com’s Technical Contact is Albert Pike and the address is 101 Callahan Drive Alexandria, VA 22301 which is at The George Washington Masonic National Memorial. What exactly this has to do with the plot of the movie is yet unknown."

Now I looked into this Albert Pike fellow and found this

"In contrast to Catholic allegations of rationalism and naturalism, Protestant objections are more likely to be based on allegations of mysticism, occultism, and even devil worship. Albert Pike is often cited by Protestant anti-masons as an authority for the position of Masonry on these issues. However, Pike, although undoubtedly learned, was not a spokesman for Freemasonry and was controversial among freemasons in general, representing his personal opinion only, and furthermore an opinion grounded in the attitudes and understandings of late 19th-century Southern Freemasonry of the USA alone. Indeed his book carries in the preface a form of disclaimer from his own Grand Lodge. No one voice has ever spoken for the whole of Freemasonry.[55]"

So this guy that is Tech Support for the website is apparently a deceased Freemason that was an expert in Black Magic, the occult and even Devil Worship. This sounded sort of like Cthulhu's realm, so I did some poking around on that as well and found out that when the Esoteric Order of Dagon (For those not to keen on Lovecraft's work, Dagon was and old one much like Cthulhu, though he was seen as more of an intermediary between the God's than a God himself)was first being formed, they posed as a Masonic sect to avoid detection.

Now I know some of this seems kind of far fetched but it is apparently derived from the only site we know is 100% Official, we also know that there is a lot of circumstantial evidence to link Cthulhu (or any of Lovecraft's work) to this film and if this is true I would say it is pretty damn important. Help me spread the word on this theory or at least help me look into it. Thanks for your time all, as always, keep me posted

  10. I personally think it's not going to be anything slightly ridiculous like Godzilla or Voltron. I think it's more likely that an entirely new sort of creature will be invented for the movie. The first time I saw this trailer, I immediately thought of the trailers for the South Korean film "The Host" which also deals with an urban monster attack (I haven't seen it yet but I want to).

Truly, I think that the movie's creators are going to keep us guessing right up until the premier.

  11. I check the trailer frame by frame. I found some stuff that may mean nothing or be helpful.
Attached to the fridge there a paper that reads ----- LIFE (M or H)AS.
In the back of the bar it is written in graffiti "rift". I checked rift.com and they only had a text with an e-mail. If they reply I'll let you know.
There are other signs as Urban _____, The P____ Textile and the other license plate mentioned A(BZ)-8633
I never noticed this, so I may be over-reacting, but slusho.com redirects you to slusho.jp.

  13. Has anyone thought about Rampage?!? Here's what I think. Slusho - "You just can't drink six". There are 6 monsters in the new Rampage video game.

    George the Ape
    Lizzie the Dinosaur
    Ralph the Wolf
    Gilman the Blowfish
    Rhett the Rat
    Ramsey the Ram

Didn't the game start when a human drank some funky soda, and that turn them into a monster that does nothing other than to destroy buildings and landmarks such as "Statue of Liberty"

Since if you read the Slusho histoty, they dug up the special ingredient from the sea, that might be the parasite that turns the humans into the monsters...

  14. do you really think J.J. Abrams would do a movie like that??

    get real.

btw, don't you realize that a movie with all that in it would cost much, much MORE than $30 million (reportedly the budget)?

I'm not 100% certain that that's the REAL budget, but still......just go back to the FIRST question.

  15. you know dennis (and the rest of our "scooby gang"), i think there are going to be just a few of us this time around.

those "losties" that are now "clovers" or "cloves" or whatever.

and as far as the name of the movie, if not "1-18-08", then perhaps "the one we don't speak of"??

    hahaha.

  16. but if i had to choose ONE of the choices, I'd choose "Leviathan".

whether or not that would be the title, no big. But it just MIGHT be about the end of the world, with Leviathan.

It will come to devour the Earth.

    Eh....we'll see.

talk to you guys later. I'm going to bed.

  17. I think there's going to be two monsters. The first roar shakes the city and flickers the power. The roars afterwards don't do anything like that, even the explosion doesn't shake anyone from what we can tell, not even a very loud boom. Could explain why the statue of liberty's head was torn off and thrown, possibly at something? Could be fighting, could be random monster destruction, but it obviously was in the water before any of this happened.

  18. the host + the stuff + futurama. it's going to be a pissed off sea creature because we are putting its children into our drinks.

    ReplyDelete
  19. There's some talk about tying the movie with amargeddon/Revelations/Rapture.

From Revelations 13: "Then I stood on the sand of the sea. And I saw a beast rising up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, ....(omitted)...Now the beast which I saw was like a leopard, his feet were like the feet of a bear, and his mouth like the mouth of a lion. The dragon gave him his power...
Then I saw another beast coming up out of the earth, and he had two horns like a lamb and spoke like a dragon."

Personally, I'd like to see Cthulu. Either way, I can't see either movie on a $30M budget.

also on one of the thumbnails regarding the trailer stills you can see the number 401 and the name of a street but you cant tell name of the street i tried google maps to see if i could spot that building to spot the location but is very hard to tell.

  22. I really think it's connected to revelations. If true it'll be interesting to see revelations represented on screen in a present setting.

  23. It's a long post...but it might be worth it.

Ok...so I have been hooked on this film since I followed a link to the trailer a few weeks ago. So hooked in fact that I've been telling everyone i know to watch it when ever I get a chance. So imagine my surprise when i was talking to a friend at a party yesterday and when I mentioned the trailer he said "Yah! Looks great doesn't it. To bad it's never going to be in the movie."

I was shocked. Not that my friend knew about the film, I live in Hollywood, people know stuff around here. My shock was that he knew more than the average person these days. Especially since I know he's not working on the picture directly. Turns out he met a guy a few months ago who is working on the picture.

So my friend tells me that according to the information he got the monster in the film is nothing that we have seen before. It is an original monster/parasite that comes up from the ocean. And while the look of the film will be like what we have seen in the preview none of the preview footage is from the film. The preview was filmed before principal photography even started.

I don't know what to think about this intel. I still wish it was Cthulhu, but I trust the guy that gave me the info. On top of that it really sounds like something JJ Abrams would do.

I guess I'll just have to wait to see if my friend was right.

  24. What do I think the monster is?

Well, I was going to say aliens, or at least not something terrestrial.

After that last comment from aradia, I just don't know.

    we'll see...

  25. I've been leaning toward (and hoping for) Cthulhu, but recent information has caused me to believe it will be something new, probably similar to a Leviathan/ Cthulhu/ giant seahorse- type creature. I'm jazzed for this movie, but the only disappointing thing I've read so far is that the idea is to begin the movie at the end, after the attack and during clean-up when someone finds the video camera. Beginning a disaster movie with a calm aftermath immediately neuters any impending doom in the movie itself....I hope that information is not accurate!

I think you may find it as an interesting and completely different angle to the whole thing.

  28. i read an article that said that the movie is independent of anything already made.

"9NEWS Entertainment Reporter Kirk Montgomery learned exclusively on Friday from a secret source, who is on the set of the film every day, that it is not a sequel or a remake (which precludes King Kong or Godzilla). It is not Voltron or "Lost"-related."

Besides Voltron is linked to a different studio.

This "source" also went on, "The source says 50 percent of the $30 million budget for the film is devoted to special effects.
" The rest of the article said, "The official Web site is www.1-18-08.com, but the source tells Kirk that apparently a Japanese-style Web site, www.slusho.jp, has lots of clues yet undiscovered by the rabid fans who have been scouring the Internet for hints.

The source told Kirk the biggest clue of the trailer is in the line: "I saw it, it's alive, it's huge."

The source also says the sound the "creature" makes is another big clue. He says the creature is an organic, living thing."

  33. Thanks to YOU and your YOUtube cast, me and my friend are addicted to the "quest"! (no life- ha!)

Anyway- if you look at many of the clues, many mention Water, Ice and "what was thought was dead"/dead returning/people "missing"- adheres to many of the Cthulhu Mythos as well as H.P. Lovecraft (East Coast references), but also with all the Scientific references of some of the "clue" sites-it also could be much like the Book/Movie/Game "Parasite Eve".

By the way, we used the Metallica song, "The Thing that should not be" from the album Master of Puppets:
    http://darklyrics.com/lyrics/metallica/masterofpuppets.html#3

-As a reference point, that led us to Wikipedia and H.P. Lovecraft. "The Call of KTULU (as it was mis-spelled)" from Ride the Lightning, was an instrumental, it seems the Late Cliff Burton (Bass) was a fan of the mythos.

    Also-
    Cthulhu is known also as:
    1. Behemoth
    2. Leviathan (think also "Whale"
    references in Slusho site)
    3. The Elder Ones (think of creatures in movies: The Mouth of Madness; Hellboy and Howard the Duck)

Remember- J.J. Abrams is going to present a "Monster" that CAN NOT be corny, if it IS Cthulhu, its going to be HORRENDOUS! like it is in the stories (If you SEE it, you go MAD), he risks alot with this Viral campaign, if the "pay-off" doesn't work, his career may go into the depths of the Sea too.

It may BE something never done before.

And since its the creator of LOST, don't think the Monster will "create havoc stomping through N.Y.C.", no . . . the "victims" will go TO the creature, it will be a psychological thriller. It will be the tension of the story and characters that will drive us crazy till the end and our final look at the creature . . .
THAT -will truly be a terrifying movie ;)

I hope you guys have more YOUtube casts as well, we like the sence of humour ("ITS HAAAAIR!!!").
    Have fun all.
