Cloverfield Review - AICN

"CLOVERFIELD is worth the obsession"
Harry Knowles of Ain't It Cool News has posted his review of his early screening of Cloverfield. The good news is, he can't say enough good things about it!

Here are some of the glowing comments, that almost seem to be pandering for a spot on one of those full page newspaper ads:
  • Utterly Brilliant
  • CLOVERFIELD is a bold genre-reinvention unlike anything we’ve ever seen before
  • An intimate perspective on an impossibly grand scale human disaster beyond most human levels of comprehension
  • Like SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, but instead of Nazis it’s a giant monster
  • The movie is a landmark genre film
  • A true milestone in film
  • A complete reinvention of the disaster movie, the giant monster movie and even the love story
  • I absolutely love this film and the only thought I had when it was over was how I wanted to watch it 5 more times today
  • Good Bad Robot!!!
  • It feels like nothing less than the rebirth of the cinema ;)
Take all this with a grain of salt, as Slashfilm reports that Harry also gave Godzilla a glowing review...

Unfortunately, the review is filled with spoilers (and obscenities), so instead of linking to it, I have posted an EDITED, SPOILER-FREE copy of the review here:

  2. I was excited to read Harry's review. I would call it "excited" and not necessarily "sophmoric," but that's ok. It's going to get a lot of people excited for the movie, I think.

One thing...I'm pretty sure the "rebirth of cinema" blurb was for a movie called "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly." I saw that on /Film.

  4. Dennis, do you mean gave instead of game? sorry i sound like a complete knob correcting you =/

  5. Well, Harry is clearly excited. That's nice.

Of course, Harry was also telling us we'd love Jar Jar Binks, so take it with a very large grain of salt.

Myself, I think I'll wait for the Rotten Tomatoes roundup. :)

  6. I read Harry's review. I must say, he's a little overboard. While I'm extremely excited to see this movie, I can't stomach his writing style (or lack thereof).

Thanks for providing a spoiler-free version for the purists.

  10. They showed an advanced screening of Cloverfield at my university last night, and after waiting in line for over an hour and sitting in an auditorium packed with 625 people, I got to see it! Talk about security, though... there were people from Paramount walking the aisles the whole time to make sure there weren't any "pirates"

I won't spoil anything, but it was good! Different, but good. I was pretty pleased with it. It was certainly a new kind of monster movie.

  11. This confirms something I have felt from the beginning. This film seems to have elements of greatness to it.
I can hardly wait for the reaction from other critics. Thanks for documenting the history so well for us Dennis. I more week!

  12. Does anyone know if there is another JamieandTeddy video coming out today? I've been hearing the rumor.

Also, does anyone know if Reeves shot this like Blair Witch or if it one edited like one continuous shot?

  13. A little overboard? The man is out of control. There has to have been other critics at this screening who could offer evaluations of more depth than this pubescent, desperate-to-hump love letter. This is the sort of review my 13 year-old brother would write by text message to his buddies about a Sout Park episode.

Isn't there any other new review out there? One that's at least semi-intelligent?

  14. Well the reviews are out, I guess its time to go into hiding until I see the movie!

<3 Dennis for being super awesome!

  15. Wait, did people not like Godzilla?

  18. Yeah, if it wasn't for you, Dennis, I would be in hiding too. But I know ONE site to go to without being spoiled!!!!

  19. Eeeew. He liked Godzilla? That doesn't bode well, but I still have high hopes.

  20. Hey! My 7 year-old likes Godzilla and Jar Jar. ;-)

I agree that you can't get too carried away by one or two reviews, but how much better do we feel that so far there hasn't been anything negative? I've been looking forward to this for 6 months and hoping it wouldn't turn out to be a pile of garbage. Hopefully JJ & company can keep the spoilers to a minimum, as it really has made the build up to the movie more enjoyable.

Maybe this is a trend . . . First The Mist, now Cloverfield. No more showing all the good parts in a trailer so there's nothing to surprise you about a movie.

  21. ya know, the godzilla movie wasnt THAT bad, i havent seen it in a while so maybe im wrong, but the special effects were half decent right?

    ReplyDelete
  22. No. No, they weren't.

Well, by standards back then, maybe, but the plot and story relies far too much on dialogue.

The Godzilla people thought it would be scary to have people telling you it was the most terrifying thing ever... Yeah, those rubber suits still give me nightmares.

  23. i've officially quit unfiction until i see this..although, after i see this i won't have a reason to go to unfiction sooo... yeah.. it sucks you had to spoil the movie for our protection, but it goes wothout saying that you have THE BEST CLOVERFIELD SITE!!!

thank you thank you thank you

  25. Umm am I the only one that enjoyed Godzilla, I don't if its because I
was young at the time but I thought it was a good movie. I don't want to hi jack this post just wondering why people dislike it so much.

  26. Watch it again, rosario. You WON'T like it. It's painful on the eyes, I saw it about a month ago.
