Slashfilm has a new post about some sidewalk chalk advertising Cloverfield showing up "all around" San Fransisco.
It appears this may be part of a larger, overall guerrilla marketing campaign.
The slogan "What is Cloverfield?" matches some promotional postcards I have found (more on that later). Another slogan "What Is It?" is also featured on postcards, as well as mini-posters (like the kind you would see "flyposted" on construction sites in L.A.)
The fact that the advertising began today also coincides with a job listing posted on CraigsList for seasonal help promoting a "NYC Monster" movie from December 21-January 4th (with possible extension to January 18)
I don't know if the viral marketing is winding down, but the street marketing campaign looks like it is alive and huge!
* Thanks to Johnnyutah16 at unFiction for finding the job ad!
"I don't know if the viral marketing is winding down, but the street marketing campaign looks like it is alive and huge!"
ReplyDeleteLOL! Nice callback!
Yeah, I dont know, I think it might just be a few fans running around Chicago tagging...
Let's hope they have better luck with this street campaign than the "Aqua Teen Hunger Force" guys had in Boston back in January.
ReplyDeleteI think this is some great stuff!
ReplyDeleteAnd you know, every little bit of advertisement helps.
Just today, our school released the newspapers, and with me being in Journalism, I decided to write an article about Viral Marketing - you can only guess what film I covered most. ;)
And it's interesting, because with that article alone, I've gotten seven people interested in a film they had never heard before, and I'm sure more people around the school will wonder, "What is this Cloverfield film...let me look it up...."
Oh, and just noticed that comingsoon.net has a poll, "Which January release are you anticipating the most?"
ReplyDeleteCloverfield's at the top, with 62.3%. Pretty shhweet.
Do you think we'll get another video on jamieandteddy.com? or is that over?
ReplyDeleteThe posters say "I saw it. It's alive. It's huge." The postcards for the widget deal are the same.
ReplyDeleteRight Pinkhamster! You cracked me up with that comment. :-)
ReplyDeleteHey Dennis, you gonna apply for one of those jobs? :D
ReplyDeletemy cousin just got a box of flyers to put on peoples cars with that picture and widget info on it for the early viewing
ReplyDeleteso its over? if so this is gay..dennis deserved to win it.
ReplyDeletei dunno if it's over.. i mean.. it's got a link to facebook for exclusive info on the movie.. and says to grab the widget for a chance to win.. so i doubt it's over.. my cousin works for paramount for movie previews and stuff.. a couple of days ago he got a bunch of posters.. just stuff he's supposed to hand out to advertise the movie
ReplyDeleteI dont think it is a marketing campaign...i think its just Cloverfield fanboys just taggin everywhere!!! MUAHAHAHA!

I don't live in big enough of a city for that type or promotion, otherwise I absolutly would.

Please send me some pictures better pictures of the postcards and fliers. Also, can send me some of the posters and postcards by mail? I'll re-reimburse you for the postage (or send you something in exchange!) - send me an email...

I should know more on Monday at the latest, unless KJS-118 can hook me up, yo!
dennis are you going to post the latest podcast? i missed it while it was live!
ReplyDeleteDennis, I have a few items that look EXACTLY like the ones you have but instead of "What Is It.", they read, "I Saw It. It's Alive. It's Huge." The postcards for the widget deal have the exact same "quotes". Also, word is that advance showings for critics and the like is on the 15th.
ReplyDeleteBTW, for the readers, the posters with the "I Saw It. It's Alive. It's Huge." slogan are 17" x 11".
ReplyDeleteAnybody else think that "What is it?" is a terrible slogan?
ReplyDeleteAny chance that the city scene in the poster is not NYC? Maybe since there
ReplyDeleteare multiple sightings, there are events taking place in San Fran, NYC, and other places? SoL could just represent NY, the city scene could
represent another city??
I'd love to put up a billboard in my town, but alas, do not have the moolah. I get the feeling there is
ReplyDeleteone piece of the plot we are not going
to see or be told about that ties everything together until we are sitting in the theatre, and I guess that's how it should be ultimately. There's gotta be more to the SoL being
destroyed, some kind of metaphor, but I don't know what.
