Cloverfield Magna?

Kadokawa is a big, Japanese comic-book (manga) publisher. If you go to the Kadokawa Shoten homepage and watch the flash header, there is an advertisement for a comic called 'KISHIN'. Notice the similar style to 1-18-08? Wait...it gets better. Notice something strange in the ad for that comic? The ship has the Tagruato logo on it!!!?!?! WTF??!?!?

Is this some kind of Cloverfield comic, or another Heroes-style product placement? I don't speak Japanese, so I'll need a little help here...

If you follow the link from the ad, it takes you to: http://www.kadokawa.co.jp/mag/ace/

  4. If you click on the banner (with the Tagruato logo tanker), it takes you to a page, and about a quarter way down, there is a little icon to click..but right below is a copyright by Paramount!

  5. If you click the advertisement, it sends you to a web comic after a while. i guess it has to do with some students. then theres a boat with chains, i guess dragging the monster. its not photo shopped either, theres a panel that has the whole tagruato sumbol on it. the most interesting part of it is that the end theres a panel with something peaking outside of the water with chains. and the credits indeed do have the bad robot and jj abrams name on it.

Click on the OPEN button at the top left :|

You'll see a 'virtual' comic book. At the end of the comic book, there is the credits of Cloverfield :)

Looks like a japanese version of the movie :)

    Cheers!

  11. Dennis do you think the guy with the hancuffs is a symbol for the man with the handcuffs on the Chuai station news?
I think they are the same people but i dont understand with this means.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Oh great, does anyone feel like translating the entire book?

    ReplyDelete
  13. One last thing, could the boy be a young Ganu? Perhaps Teddy? Or the creator of the monster?

    ReplyDelete
  14. Actually, before the Tagruato symbol panel it shows more than one ship with three of them pulling the chained monster.

This may be a precursor to the latest 1-18-08.com pictures.

  15. Here ya go guys a Japanese translator: http://www.gokanji.com/cgi-bin/j-e/dict

I tried translating "kishin" i got many cool results.

    like

    kishin: fierce god
    kishin: noble men of rank

    ReplyDelete
  16. There's an American-looking boy on the ship... is that Teddy and Jamie's picture on the phone???

  17. Hey Dennis if you click on the question mark in the page where you can see the full comic page you can see what appears to be a key or instructions. But i cant speak Japanese

    ReplyDelete
  18. BranJ said that if you go to http://www.gokanji.com/cgi-bin/j-e/dict and he got the translation for "kishin". one of them was "noble men of rank"
The guy getting beat up in the begining looks a lot like Hiro from the Heroes TV show. And I should know, I love that show! And to me "noble man of rank" could have something to do with the heroes in Heroes. So this might be a Heroes/Cloverfield comic, and that I wouldn't mind. But I can't read it, so idk for sure. but most likey its a magna version of Cloverfield. I might know someone who can read this. I'll get back to you...

  20. okay so all of us who saw the comic realize that this is the japanese side of the story. it's the story line for the tagruato tanker that's gonna be cap-sized in the movie... i'm not spoiling... i'm just pointing out the obvious... is there someone out there who's paid as much attention to the details as i have?

    ReplyDelete
  21. is there any monster spoilers?

  22. Dennis, The dead giveaway is that below the button, it says 2008 paramount pictures all rights reserved...LOL!

    GOOOOOOD FIND! COOOOOOL

  23. Now we have Tagruato warships, the newest picture on 1-18-08.com COULD be US planes vs. Tag ships...

Looks like a funny manga ^_^

    ReplyDelete
  24. OMFG..... You guys were right, TAGRUATO has their own ships. They're towing the monster. This must mean that GANU knew about it and even captured it. Perhaps this is how they make Kaitei no mitsu and slusho. The monster is a slave? I think they were towing it to CHUAI?

VERY VERY INTERESTING!!!!!!!!!! THIS IS AWESOME! HUGE CLUE!

    ReplyDelete
  25. you know the thing that anoys me is they really want to make this an american monster but so far i see japan all over it grrr

    ReplyDelete
  26. 1. is the next issue really gonna come out in feb? If it does, I guess that means we get to keep the cloverfield universe alive for more fun after the 18th.

    2. Will be able to read this in english eventually?

    3. How was this found?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Guys, doesn't anybody see the animated banner after you click the small banner on the homepage? It says "2008.1.11" and you see, multiple times, a squid swimming through the water and there is a quick image of the squid being chained or something. Does anybody else see this or am I crazy?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Hmmmm. Are they towing the monster? or a giant squid (while trying to catch the monster). Confusing!

    ReplyDelete
  29. LANCE,
Thats a preview of the Manga. Just look at the Manga and it will make sense.

I'm still wondering about the squid. Is it bait? or something the monster was eating? Are they towing the monster or the squid (fishing for the monster). By the way, Sperm Whales eat giant squid. So the BIG WHALE monster theory has merit.

I agree with CHRONOS. What is with the JAPANESE comic, they should have written it in ENGLISH. I guess they want to pump up the Japanese market too.

    Things are getting interesting indeed.

  30. Hi Dennis and everyone,
Here's a link to a site that did pretty good translation analysis on the manga:

    http://www.comicbookresources.com/news/newsitem.cgi?id=12752

No spoilers, so thats good. Hope this helps.

  31. Shounen Ace (少年エース) is the name of the comic company that this is published under.

I don't know which translator you put the phrases in to translate it under, but that's a pretty clunky piece of work you have there.

"The first for Shounen Ace! We're starting a limited online comic! A grand tale wrapped in mystery, what hardships await this youth's future!?

    Cloverfield/Kishin

Four installments are to be released, with the next scheduled late Feburary, you can't view previous issues so don't miss them!"

    And the first page translation:

"Why have I been born? (literally: What reason...)"

"If this is fate... then it is nothing but darkness."

"I wonder if I have any ability to escape from this..."

And then the rest is basically a kid getting beat up and doing flashbacks about his mother and how he would be better off if he had died with her...

    ReplyDelete
  32. http://www.comicbookresources.com/news/newsitem.cgi?id=12752

A site I found discussing the comic book and some loose translation. It looks like a prequel to the movie, but could be a spoiler so be warned

    ReplyDelete
  33. Guys, seriously, don't use Babelfish/Google Translate as a translation source. They're about 80-90% incorrect. Wait for someone who actually speaks Japanese to provide a correct translation.
"The boy's first ace" = Shounen Ace, which is a manga publisher.

Here's the thread on Unfiction, which someone has posted translations:
    http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=23570

  34. Hey.. could the young man in the illustrations who seems to be sweating and menaced by a big guy.. could he be our Teddy caught by the Tagruato security?

Very cool art and I'm very excited to see the translation!

Once again, Cloverfield Clues has the latest info! Great job, again, Dennis!

I think this is a prequel... it could be the explanation of how the monster came about. But also, it will give insight into the rise of the Tagruato Empire. It's Ganu's story!!! hello the last line here!!! "And then the rest is basically a kid getting beat up and doing flashbacks about his mother and how he would be better off if he had died with her..." !!!
Remember Noriko left to find that ingredient... yeah right!!! something happened and it happened BAD!!! YEY we do get the scientist in the lab coat but we get them in comic book form!!!

anybody agree with me??? or am I guessing out of my ass?

  36. I just came back from seeing Cloverfield in Australia!!! And I am not joking when I say this...it was unreal!!! I think everyone here is going to love it! I can't get enough of it. I wanna go see it again right now!!! But it doesn't officially open here until tomorrow! It was soooo good...when I was driving home afterwards, I honestly felt like it could've been real...I felt like the monster was just gonna come out of nowhere! Ok...that's enough now...I'm over excited haha...anyway...I wont tell you anything else...just that it was fantastic

  37. You can use http://www.cosplaylab.com/links.asp

to translate the page, it isnt always 100% correct but it helps out a lot.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I'm really new to this ARG so this theory could be old, but could the monster be Nariko? Her story says she went on an under sea adventure to find an ingredient. Maybe she found nectar and had so much it turned her into the monster and Ganu (her son) going to New York is what brings her there?

  40. The ships seem to be towing the monster. I don't think they've captured it, more like it's gotten accidently caught up in their nets, like from the '98 Godzilla with the fishing trawlers. As for the handcuffed guy in the news video, he looks like an executive with a briefcase handcuffed to his arm, probably containing important information. My final observation is the final panel, looks like there's almost a (psychic?) connection between the guy and the monster.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Did no one honestly NOT see this coming? Really, I was just waiting for this.

    ReplyDelete
  42. OK, I haven't read any of the above comments, and I don't read/speak Japanese, but IMHO... the character in that ad is Teddy Hanssen. Tagruato have him chained to a chair on their destroyer/ship, and they're interrogating him.

Don't know what the signifigance of the giant squid is tho, maybe a reference to Clover?

    ReplyDelete
  43. Dennis,
I'm hardly translating the manga at Unfiction. A little bit weird content, hehe

    Best regards! Merzmensch aka kosmopol

  44. no.

this comic is obviously about the history of Slusho!

the first two comics will be like the History page of slusho.jp and by the third comic, maybe it will actually be the comic version of the "Cloverfield" movie??

and then the 4th and final issue, it could be an epiliogue of sorts.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I really don't think our young man in the comic is Teddy. I think if he's any character we already know, it's far more likely that he's Ganu Yoshida as a young man. We know next to nothing about his life as yet, other than that he lost his mother and that he later took over the company now known as Tagruato.

It could be that this comic cuts pretty fluidly between past and present. Should be interesting to see what the translation brings.

BTW, anybody know what the name "Aiba" means in Japanese? Is it a surname or a nickname?

    ReplyDelete
  46. Dennis,

my translation is now complete (from beginning until end).
    http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=23570
    and mirror here:
    http://merzmensch.blogspot.com/2008/01/cloverfield-manga.html.

Thanks to Arienai, I've remastered all the images - you can now read Japanese and translation. My girlfriend looked up the whole translation, so there are no mistakes now.

    Following news:

    our hero's name is
    Aiba Kishin

You can see his name in his pass. (Aiba is his name, and name of the girl is Aiko).

Next: this is the first part of four volumes in Japan. Release in Japan is in April 2008. Till April they will publish four parts of Kishin.

  47. Hey, I don't know if people just missed this, but on the comic website when you look at the full comic and go to the last page it has the date

    2008 1 18 with japaneese charachters

then it goes on with 2 more lines of japaneese

    then it says

    "Produced by:
    JJ Abrams
    Bryan Burk"

then it names more names and has the bad robot logo and a paramount pictures copyright

obviously this is something intentially put here by Abrams and the Cloverfield clue crew

  48. okay i've been following this site since this all basically started, ever since the first post and i've never chimmed in. despite all that i've found, but i think this ones a little obvious. the boys mother is the mother who went out to sea to find the perfect ingredient for slusho and never came back. the squid in the picture that was eaten and was found on the beach was the squid that was chained to the ship that the cloverfield monster caught up with and destroyed. guys, i went back and read all the post after seeing this movie and j.j. has yet to make this whole thing way too complicated, i think we need to take whats on the surface, because out of all the far fetched ideas that have been hatched since transformers, i dont think one of them came to fruition.

    ReplyDelete
  49. That is a good idea about the squid Garrett. I think the tanker isn't towing Clover, it is pulling the bait, the squid. Hmmm

    ReplyDelete
  50. i wish theres a part of the movie a another video about the incident perhaps

    ReplyDelete
  51. I also find it interesting that on Jaimie's Myspace page she doesn't have Teddy as one of her top friends, if not THE top friend. Just wondering......
