1-18-08 - Photo #11 - Beached

There is a new photo on 1-18-08.com. The remains of some thing have washed up on shore... but what is that thing? Or things? Is that a giant bite?

UPDATE: the link above is to our mirror of the original 1-18-08 site. DO NOT go to the original 1-18-08 website anymore. The domain expired and is no longer controlled by Paramount, and someone else snatched it up to run ads with malware.

* Thanks to Jason L, Patrick H, Adrian R for emailing me first!

  4. I'm sure the 1-18-08 website will remain up and running, and will continue to release photographs as time passes. It looks like there is a raft out in the water with a handful of people on board. Are these the survivors of the Chuai oil rig disaster?

  5. I think that are whales killed by the monster, obviously.

I'm pretty sad because here in Spain even 1 of Feb. I will can't see Cloverfield, they have to translate it and they are very slowy.

    Greetings!

    new headline at tagruato:http://tagruato.jp/headlines.php?story=news_08_01_18

    Ganu Fights Off Attackers

Tagruato is proud to report that Ganu Yoshida, sustaining no injuries from his recent attack, is continuing his trip as scheduled. "They tried to hold down my hands," smiled Yoshida at today's BevVo press conference, "But I can still point to the stars."

Yoshida was ambushed yesterday afternoon by a radical gang as he left a important restaurant. The group was barely able to restrain Yoshida and pour a liquid over his head before Yoshida fought back, scattering the gang in all directions. Tagruato security officials believe these may be the same attackers who caused the Chuai Station incident weeks prior.

Yoshida remains in high spirits despite the incident and assures his loyalists that the stunt will not affect Slusho!'s assimilation into America. "I should really thank the criminals, " chuckled Yoshida, "Because of them, I had to postpone a meeting. Now I can extend my stay in New York. I look forward to seeing more of this wonderful city."

When asked if he feared further attacks from the radicals, who reportedly escaped after running from Yoshida's power, he responded, "No. I have nothing more to worry about from them."

  9. Can't be the monster, check the out birds. The ribcage of the body is way too small in comparison. This has to be the remains of a mid-morning snack :P

  10. its a big whale with a bite in the head ????

  11. The top left one looks to be a Sperm whale with a bite out of it.

    Looks like 'Clovey' was hungry.

  12. Dennis we need a spot where the pwoplw who have seen it can post comments because I'm full of new theories as to what's in this picture now haha

  17. Hi Dennis!!

Finally today i'm gonna see the movie!! so i think i'll know many things...i hope so !! hehhe...

Well, thinking about this photo I believe that the monster is bigger and the bite is small...i think they (whales, fishes, etc) are figthing between them...maybe is something about the seabed nectar...i don't know...

    Just thoughts...

  18. It's a Sperm whale, a dolphin and something is an odd tale.

    ReplyDelete
  19. The thing on the top left is a sperm whale his haed has been bitten .
All these things seem to be whale corpses .

    ReplyDelete
  20. The thing in the background with the bite appears to be a sperm whale. I'm not really sure that that is in the foreground though.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I can't wait for tonight when I will go watch the movie!!! Thanks to websites like yours I have been anticipating this day since this past summer.

    ReplyDelete
  22. The thing on the back left is a whale, I'm pretty sure. You can see it's teeth.

    ReplyDelete
  23. They're whales. Someone on Unfiction actually found the photo on Google that was used for the whale with its mouth open on the top left.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Holy mother of God.

    That is downright nasty.

BTW, Dennis, you should remove the Wikipedia entry on cloverfield from the site.

They have posted the whole plot taken from a site aptly titled "moviespoiler.com" or something like that.

Now, I'll go back to curse the powers that be who decided cloverfield should be shown in my country 2 weeks after the original US release.

    Cheers!

  25. Wonder how long this will go on?

    ReplyDelete
  26. They look like Sperm Whales -- look at the one with the bite taken out -- they dive to great depths so they might have reached to monster

    ReplyDelete
  27. 0.o Bizarre. I wonder if it was chewed on by the big beastie or the smaller beasties. Oh, and now that the movie's out, can we discuss the clues along with the movie now that it's out? Also, (first :D )

    ReplyDelete
  28. well the back one is obviously a sperm whale whose head seemed pretty tasty to the monster, as for the rest of the stuff, i have no idea.
This is gonna be great, 2 hours and 15 minutes till i see it!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Looks like they destroyed the monster..

    ReplyDelete
  30. This is actually picture number 11 but whatever.

Looks like a big crab or whale or something...

Dude!! I agree.. i havent seen the movie yet, but just knowing there's a monster from the sea, and having Slusho etc involved, makes me think the bottom left could be a claw, maybe a 'giant' crab from the deep that came up with 'Clovy'? Or its a killer whale on its side?

  34. the one int he lower right is definately a whale too. the thing that looks like a claw is just the tail at a weird angle

    ReplyDelete
  35. I saw the movie, and I must saym the whole musical angle really worked. And thanks for the tip about the couch ;)

    ReplyDelete
  36. The hubby and I are going to see it tomorrow. I "cheated" and read a synopsis someone had written after seeing a midnight show. But it hasn't ruined the movie for me. I am disappointed that a lot of my friends that have seen it are disappointed by the movie. What were they expecting? It's been marketed as a movie about a group of friends that go through a horrific disaster ... I just hope that all the backstory will become a film as well ... looking forward to future Cloverfield storylines!

    ReplyDelete
  37. First Time Poster. I have a theory on the photo's I think they provide clues to what's happened but I also believe they may provide clues as to who they belong to!! I believe they belong to Jaime. From my understanding she is only seen in a few minutes of the film and it's never explained what happens to her. Some of the photos have her name on the back of them. If you look at some of them from the night of the attack it's very evident they are taken by someone who experienced the attack along with the main characters. It's possible Jaime survives and may find out what happens to Teddy afterall and meets with the person that Teddy told her would contact her in the tape he made for her and uses these pictures as evidence to provide as evidence against Tagrumato(Sorry if I spelled that wrong). I do think we need to analyze the photos but I think it's important to figure out who they belong too and then we may have a better understanding of things.

    ReplyDelete
  38. If Jamie was passed out on the couch during the party, there is a very good chance she "expired" during the movie, unless someone else took her out. Which we obviously don't know for sure one way or another.

I'm just glad this whole thing isn't "over" yet. I can't wait to see what happens next!

    ReplyDelete
  39. I saw the movie this morning. I noticed Jamie right before they enter in the little shop. If you look at the Cloverfield Four Minute Preview (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nnpd4KiqrSE), you will see her back (Hud is behind her) from 03:26 to 03:32.

    Best movie ever!!!

  40. Could the carcass in the middle of the screen be the beached squid from the magna? Just a thought.

  41. tom and mars bell: I agree. I was mad at all the annoying teenagers complaining about how bad it was. People don't seem to realise that this isn't a fairytale monster-attacks-and-we're-all-closer-for-it story, it's part of a bigger story and kind of [this is stretching a bit] a commentary on people screwing with nature and having to face the consequences.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Much of the dislike seems to be directed toward the ending. I think it's perfect (although like everyone, I would have liked to have seen more). I heard several teenagers whining about it as they walked out of the theater, but while it was happening, everyone seemed to be enjoying it thoroughly (especially Hud's commentary). My guess is that with kids becoming more and more jaded (seriously, this is a generation that thinks Saw, Hostel and Devil's Rejects are high art), something that ends unresolved is going to provoke annoyance in many of them. It ended exactly as it had to (although it's a stretch to believe the monster snuck up on them), and I think it will generate huge interest in what happens next.

  44. I'm a bit confused. This is spoiler free now because its post release so i feel i can ask this (Sorry im new to all this cloverfield buzz, just saw the movie lastnight midnight was fascinated and confused and have been reading online for the past like 3 hours). but just incase....

    SPOILER WARNING

Did the monster in central park towards the end seem a bit small for the monster. I mean maybe its just me, i seem to not have been paying close attention to the film being that i missed the thing crashing in the water at the end so i could be wrong. but yeah Someone theories?

    ReplyDelete
  45. Brett; I actually thought of this theory.

  46. Okay so This is not a spoiler at all being that one its 1-18-2008 and that it doesn't give anything away, but technically this happens May 22nd 2008. So what I'm curious about is, will this continue until then? Will the myspaces and such continue til then and we finally get a full and understandable story, I really hope so. I guess wait for april 27th for the water thing and may 22nd for the whole thing.

  47. Ok so here is a tid-bit if info for you guys
(PS this is a huge spoiler alert, alot of info given away here)

This seems like as good a place as any to leave this gem for you guys to think about!

I am unsure how to cover my words or color them black so sorry if you read this before you see the flick!

There are more the 2 types of monsters in this film!

1: the large "300 foot monster" (as you say) the one they Napalmed in the middle of Manhattan, and then took down the chopper. (PS. it was the one Marleen said that she seen at the beginning of the film :It was ... it was eating people!"

2: the Louse monsters that came off the larger monster. They bite a you and you get sick and began to bleed out all your orifices. After witch you "Explode" as a lot of you are thinking. (I however think different, will explain after my rant.)

3: The monster that killed Hud (Hudsen) this monster was not 300 foot tall, it was no bigger then what we would see as a giant now days. judging on how far it bent down to bite Hud, it was maybe 10 - 12 foot tall.

Now I think that the louse bite you and inject you with something (if you can remember when they entered the military compound, the doc's pulled a cart passed them before Marleen did her final act, and on that cart was one of the louse. If you look at the head of it there is some orange mucus (for lack of a better work) coming from it, I think what ever it injects you with plus the human DNA sparks a rapid growth process in side you and whatever it is gets so big it begins to eat your insides and pushing everything until you ex spell blood from every orifice. (witch is why Marleen began to bleed from the eyes) and once it gets big enough it eats, or tears its way out, I have seen the movie 2 times now and she does not explode, the blood does not go all over both sides of the tent wall, only the right side, as if something tore her open! remember Aliens, the alien tore out of the stomach, same as this but on a bigger scale. as for the monster that killed Hud, I think that is what comes out on the human body after the bite, only it was full grown, accelerated growth. it would become that in 12 hours, the chopper picked them up at 6am, he said it was 6:45 (I think) when he was saying good bye, and it was light out, the sun was fully in the sky, I do not believe it was still morning!
But this is only my guess, however there WAS more than 2 monsters!

    ReplyDelete
  48. Personally with this whole smaller looking monster thing, it might just be inconsistency with animation. In the shot from the helicopter you get a full view of the monster being like practically four New York blocks long and skyscraper height. Then in the park it's much smaller. Just an animation mistake.

    ReplyDelete
  49. No chance, The breathing apparatus on the head of the smaller one was very different, as well as the face was different. If you look at the big guy right before they entered the subway it's snout was elongated, the one at the end of the flick was more human like, it was humanoid more bi-pedal if you will. It processed more human features!

    ReplyDelete
  50. not to mention I do not recall smaller T-rex-ish arms on the torso.
where on the larger one there was, plus how could you let a movie about the monster hit the movie house with that big a blunder? Abrams is a heck of a lot more attentive then that, the monster is toppling skyscrapers, and it ripped the head of the Statue of Liberty (do you know how tall the SoL is?) noway would he let it hit movies with that big of a blunder!

    ReplyDelete
  51. chris--

    With that, you've got me....

I'm going to see it again tomarrow to be sure..but i agree that there may be a third type of monster...

    ReplyDelete
  52. Now that I think about it, the faces did seem a little different. The first one we see has a longer snout. It sort of reminded me of a snake. The second one looks more humanoid. Mind you, I don't agree with this talk of the crabs injecting people with stuff that grows another monster inside them that pops out and grows super fast. That's moving into "mutant lion" territory there.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Poor Dennis, it's gonna take him at least 5 years to read the 2.3 million e-mail's he's no doubt received since he 'signed' off for the day!

    ReplyDelete
  54. about this whole there being 3 monsters tid-bit, its ridiculous guys

First off, you probaly didnt see the little arms on the "bigger" one cause you barely have time to see it to begin with and even in the helicpoter shot its too far away and youd have to be looking to see them...

secondly...more human like features? elongated snout on the "bigger" one? come on...the first time you see the head from an angle....second time its face to face...of course its goin to look a tad differnt...

lastly...when it eats hud, we are seeing it from a bottom to top view, something like that might actually look smaller cause of the angle, thus from above itll seem alot bigger...just like with skyscrappers when you stand underneath them and look up...

    ReplyDelete
  55. Honestly speaking, I don't think there is more than one. When HUD looks up at the monster, he focuses and zooms in. That is the reason it looks much smaller than before.

How did it get behind them? If you remember, it did jump up and attack the helicopter. It wasn't a small jump either because the helicopter was way above the buildings. They dragged Rob and were about to go. I figure the best explanation was it was there the whole time, just quiet. Rob and Beth back was turned when HUD went back. Hud was focused on getting the camera, ran over, and didn't notice til they brought attention to it.

It follows the monster movie protocol of being aware of the monster when its too late

    ReplyDelete
  56. ...I don't know what to think anymore... I'm going to have to see it again.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Chris, you say that they wouldn't allow that big of a blunder in the film, but what about the dates in the film? in the photos it is 1-18, but in the movie it's may...

    ReplyDelete
  58. in response to Tubbabutta:
You are one hundred percent right, they did screw up on that one, and I would love to hear them back pedal out of that! :)

    ReplyDelete
  59. Chris: This site is supposed to be spoiler free, I think it it was a bit ignorant of you to post that here. Not trying to beat on you, just saying.

And I do agree with PHZ-Sicks about there being only one monster.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Well then, I wrote a long post furthering my theory but it did not post ... DANM!

    the short of it
1: If a monster the size of the one they carpet bombed, bite, ate you there would be nothing left to hit the ground. Furthermore the larger monster at the beginning was eating people, we know this because Marleen says "It was ... It was eating people!" but there was no half eaten human bodies laying about! so the large monster would not have bitten Hud in two of whatever it would have swallowed him!

2: As for my theory about the thing growing in the human body, take a look at something that has a small life span, it get full grown in a few minutes or hours to us (remember time is something man created, it hold no relevance when assessing the growth of a creature.) if you recall when they took Marleen into the tent, just before that they seen a man wheeled passed them on a cart and his body ripped open, and insides missing. he was not exploded, here i think Abrams was showing us what was about to happen to Marleen. He wanted to keep the movie PG-13 so he could not show her graphically getting tore open, but to show the before and after was ok.

3: the Sea Bed Necture (henceforth called SBN)tie in. We have seen first hand what the SBN does to the human body, with Jamie. Now what it does to these monster we do not know, but what if the SBN that we are eating in our food from the chinese dinner, or in our Slusho, made these things speed up like they did to Jamie, only it sped the growth! or how about the SBN is not a herb, but rather a egg, and the smaller monsters bite with a fertilizer? Iono how it happens, but my money is on the things growing in you! and the SBN has something to do with it!

    ReplyDelete
  61. Personally, like I've stated before, I think that the whole size of the monster issue is most likely just a mess up in proportions with the animation department. However, I can swear that the faces looked different from when they go into the tunnels to when Hud gets chomped. Before the subway, the monster looks straight down at the camera and the face looks like a snakes. I even pointed that out to my cousin in the theater. I was like "What was that, it looked like a snake" because it looked like it had sort of a longer snake snout with two fangs on top. Then I see the final dude who looks alienish. It could just be that the first guy had smoke near him and it was a quick shot, but at this moment I'm not sure.

    ReplyDelete
  62. As I do apologize for the spoiler to all the people who have not seen it, however I did state in my first post this was a huge spoiler. Now to assume someone Ignorant (Not to brow beat you back) with out checking ones intelligence first is a bit unbecoming of you sir or madam! for if you look up at the statement on the right side of the top of this page it says, and I quote.

"First, let me say this site is a SPOILER-FREE zone until the movie is officially released on 1-18-08. Please don't post links to images of the monster, or early reviews of the movie until then."

The last I checked the date sir or madam it is the 19th of Jan., So I ask you to please place only well thought out statements here not the unresearch attacks!

    Thank you

    ReplyDelete
  63. I'm sorry that I hadn't noticed that. :(

I suppose you are correct, but there are still people the have not seen the movie, and though your comment had a spoiler alert on it, this whole box of comments has turned into a discussion involving spoilers. It's not that I think you're stupid or anything, it's just that someone who had not seen the movie would have come in here and scrolled down, seeing nothing but spoilers.

I can't speak for someone who hasn't, since I have, but once again, I'm just saying.

    ReplyDelete
  64. It's a bunch of whales. The top left animal is a sperm whave's head with a bite taken out of it (it's mouth is open). The bottom lect is a whale's head- eye and part of a mouth. Also possibly a sperm whale. The large bloody thing is an unknown. Possibly the insides of another whale, but see the claw-like thing in the middle? Wierd... maybe a giant squid. Overall, I think this photo is trying to illustrate how deep the monster was in the ocean (sperm whales and squid are REALLY deep sea divers) and how destructive it is.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I would like to post another statement about the size difference. If you recall after they Napalmed the big guy, he fell and his arm reached to the top of the skyscraper and slid down, right before it reached up and snatched the chopper out of the air, it did not jump, why you would assume it would have to is beyond me.

The one at the end was not that big, it was not big enough to swallow Hud let alone topple a skyscraper!

    ReplyDelete
  66. Okay I won't deny the idea that it may be more than one for one reason.

The insane size difference between the park and lower east side. Also I can't remember if there was any lung like pink bubbles on the head of the city monster. While the park monster does.

But as far as the deep theories on creatures implanting you, idk..

    ReplyDelete
  67. the sperm whale is on top, there is a squid in the bottom left and another whale on the right

    ReplyDelete
  68. OK So first post here but had to say the date thing is more 1-18-08 as a release date it would have been stoopid to put the may date on viral marketing, plus maybe someone doesnt know how to set the date on their camera!

As for the SBN (or whatever it actually is) appart from Jamie I dont think any of the other characters have actually eaten it (I haven't seen the film yet). Unless you see them with slusho, as its not an actual ingredient used in anything else.

With regards to the monster ripping from Marlena's chest, nothing would grow that big in that short a space of time (although it could be a family of monsters). Animals with short life spans tend to be small

    ReplyDelete
  69. Can someone tell me what that huge explosion was in the theatrical ad was please? It ain't out til Febv for us Brits

    ReplyDelete
  70. The large Explosion was the oil tanker!

Yes things that grow fast are normaly smaller, but the fact that it may be from another place, other than earth could mean that on its planet it was small! There are planets out there that are so large that they dwarf Earth, larger planet can support larger life. Do to what i seen at the end of the movie as the camera panned across the sea on Beth's "perfect day" was something falling from the heavens and crashing into the sea. Also to give reference to things on our planet (or to do with our planet) doing odd things to aliens, look at Superman! the SBN could make the alien grow rapidly, and larger.

    ReplyDelete
  71. if you leave 1-18-08.com open in the background for a while, do the pictures move around?

    ReplyDelete
  72. also, did not jj said somewhere in an interview before the monster is an adolescent in its species?

    ReplyDelete
  73. Ok, so I gave my explanation of what I think happened to Marleen, I would like to hear what you guys think happened, but explain why you think it happened. What do you think the bite did to make her do what she did.

Bear in mind she was not the first time the military seen it happen, they knew to quarantine her fast cause of her bite. And remember they had not only a guy with his body ripped open but a creature on a table as well!

With that said i would love to hear other theories.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Here is another pear of movie wisdom for you guys to pounder ... I just found a site that is saying that the paramount insider is saying the movie (Cloverfield) is a giant monster movie, and is being referred to as "The Parasite"

This supports my theory a bit huh?

    http://www.aintitcool.com/node/33104
this is a link to where it stated what i just told you!

    ReplyDelete
  75. Chris, I don't mean to offend you, but you REALLY need to learn some more biology. Larger planet =/= larger life forms. Granted, our biological science may not be able to explain the monster (though really, I have a friend who works in bio labs who explained the monster very simply as far as its skeletal structure and whatnot), but it's simply the fact that a creature that large, that clearly has an advanced pulmonary (breathing) system could not grow that quickly. Its muscles and organs would simply not be able to handle the strain.

As far as what happened to Marlena, I don't think there were eggs or anything. I think that the parasites had an enzyme in their mouths that cause an allergic reaction, much like a mosquito bite - to a huge monster, its not too big of a deal. To a human, we pop like a zit.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Has anybody else, come across the fact...that they purposely named the 2 leading male characters...Hud and Hawk? Short ode to a film called Hudson Hawk? or is that too old of a movie for u guys...Google that shite son...see how that ties into the plot. u know me, i'mma go waaaaaay overboard with this one...so...off to google

    ReplyDelete
  77. No no, no offense taken sir, I am looking for other options, see you are looking at this as a real, biologically correct happenstance. I on the other hand am looking at this as a monster movie, Not all monster movies ... heh, not many at all not that i think about it, make a whole lot of sence when it comes to a real biologic standpoint ... Do they??

With that said, I present this to you. Can your friend in the biologic field explain the happening ... "biologically" of a alien??
The answer is no he can not! See that is the great thing about making a movie about a alien creature ... it does not have to match, or make any since with our feeble scientific, or "biologic" equations!

but thank you for your input sir! :)

    ReplyDelete
  78. Actually, chris, he can.

I really wish he was here, but that's all I heard about after AVP:R. How the alien would work - apparently theyre far more efficient than we are.

  79. my bad for doublies, even though Hudson Hawk was a bomb, the general idea still is...Hudson being released, and ending up in the middle of this huge situation where by multiple interest want him to do multiple tasks against his will, even including the CIA, The holders of the various players' puppet strings turn out to be a "psychotic American corporation", Mayflower Industries, run by a husband-and-wife team (Grant and Bernhard) and their blade-slinging butler. The company, headquartered in the E.U.R. in Rome, is seeking to take over the world by reconstructing "La Macchina dell'Oro", a machine purportedly invented by Leonardo da Vinci which converts lead into gold. A special assembly of crystals needed for the machine to function are hidden in a variety of Leonardo's artworks: the Sforza, the Da Vinci Codex, and a scale model of DaVinci's helicopter design.(Clovey)loosely, but from what i'm reading...neither is the tie-ins to the movie that we know about.but there are various other parallels, between the two, the Japan situation, where it (the movie) bombed in the U.S. and was the shizzle in Japan, because of it's plot lines were close to a Manga comic called Lupin the 3rd. Inside the Hudson Hawk movie were other clues and clauses, and i jus think i stumbled across the dopest info yet...and it was right in the face of everyone...

  80. I have to agree with inx. My theory all along even since before the film. (When speculation began about smaller creatures) that they would carry some sort of disease. Something they could inject their prey.Like spiders. (which they look like)

Spiders have no chewing mouthparts, so they cannot chew their food. Instead they have to suck liquids out of the body of their prey. The poison which they inject in the prey contains chemicals that help dissolve or liquify the inner parts. Later the spider will then suck out the liquid content.

Which explains why they wanted to drag hud away so they could eat him later. and why she was bleeding. her insides were melting. the exploding i can't explain.

Although a strong point in chris's case is the term used throughout the making of the movie "parasite" a parasite is defined as..

Parasitism is a type of symbiotic relationship between organisms of different species in which one, the parasite, benefits from a prolonged, close association with the other, the host, which is harmed. In general, parasites are much smaller than their hosts, show a high degree of specialization for their mode of life and reproduce more quickly and in greater numbers than their hosts. Many endoparasites infect their host by penetrating its external surface, while others must be ingested by the host. Once inside the host, adult endoparasites need to shed offspring into the external environment in order to infect other hosts. Many adult endoparasites reside in the host’s gastrointestinal tract, where offspring can be shed along with host excreta.

    i know that was long..

  81. Not that I hope to get into a debate here, but I must say that it leaves me in awe every time I hear a scientist say something about how many light years away a star is, or how the biology of a thing that no one has ever seen before works. To say I know exactly how the biology of this creature (that is not real) work just off watching it move is a joke and you friend may be telling you this to impress you. I have been guilty of doing the same thing in the field that I work in. If you are with someone that does not know a whole lot about your field, but a bit, and you begin to ramble off and go on using words that sound good and big, people believe you. Odd how that works, but it is true. So I am going to go ahead and call Shenanigans on your friend.

He can not tell you anymore about any science-fiction monster, then a astronomer can tell you about the life on the next galaxy. You can not explain correctly something that is not there, only the guy who made the creation can explain its inner workings!

Now lets get back on track with the theories on the NOT real, Science-Fiction Movie at hand.

But thank you for your input.

    :)

  82. So first off, I'd like to say again: great movie. I don't know about the whole "Date/ Timeline" thing, though. I CERTAINLY HOPE the game won't end until May, but the facts all point otherwise. I mean, it is just a game, after all. But it doesn't hurt to dream....

Concerning the exploding people, I agree with a few different theories and have sort of come up with one myself. The Parasitic creatures on the big monster, as to WHAT they are, is unclear. However, what we do know is that they sort of fall off of the monster in pods, which turn into (whether by hatching or whatev)the smaller monster. The smaller ones look kind of like spiders in appearance; I said to my friend several times that they looked like tarantulas or something. When the little monsters bite you, you become infected with bacteria from the otherworldly organism. This bacteria has a strange reaction with our genetic make-up, which causes a severe clot in blood or something similar. Either way, our immune system quickly shuts down and causes us to become woozy and feel sick. Blood flow begins to slow and the organs in the blood stops being processed. At this point, when the bacteria begin to feed on our organs, which causes the blood flow to just kind of stop altogether, causing build-up. The blood flows from the mouth and eyes and. The bacteria are also reproducing at an extreme rate (it being an alien bacteria, after all) and this point, the body begins to swell rapidly, eventually resulting in the body just kind of popping from the stomach.
Either this, or the bite contains an egg or a venom, which incubates a parasite for an hour or so. Once the creature grows to full size, it no longer needs the hose and comes out the stomach, resulting in the creature on the table. The reason that didn't happen to Marlena was because they go to her in time and shoved a needle or something in her stomach, which popped her, prematurely killing the parasite inside of her.

I don't know. This is just my theory of the bite thing; a bacteria, not venom or even an egg, really. But I may be wrong and I know my science is off, but you get the idea.

    ReplyDelete
  83. One more thing I forgot to say was that they were probably just dragging Hud back to store and eat, like spiders do. They're not infecting the people on purpose with a venom, I don't think, seeing as how they hunt in packs, and so wouldn't need venom. The bite was just infested with bacteria and that bacteria is what, consequently, causes the exploding people. Just a thought, and VERY sorry for double-posting.

  84. Chris, i apologize if i made it seem like my friend was saying "for realsies" kinda stuff. What he was telling me was the "biology as we know it" explanation for how these things could work.

And his explanation for the alien was similar to the guy who created them - the whole "no real digestive system, but rather a complex acidic circulatory system so that food is absorbed directly into the blood".

Anyway, I'm gonna stick by my "giant undersea mosquitoes" theory, cuz I dont like the idea of Clover having been an alien.

Much cooler if it was a big sea monster - also possible that we've never seen it. Hud even mentions the case of scientists finding a fish we thought was extinct.

    ReplyDelete
  85. ok check this out:

What if the item you see falling from the heavens at the end of the flick, on Beth's "Perfect day" is the Tag satellite. but the on it was a parasite that awoke a creature at the bottom of the sea bed, now that monster or critter after awoken begins to eat or if it is a wale-esk critter it begins to filter in the SBN and that revs it metabolism and the organism that was on the Satellite is a parasite that finds the deep sea critter as a host and between the parasite driving it nuts and the SBN revving it up, it is on a rampage!

I think that Tag, TIDO, and the SBN all ties in somehow.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Tag, TIDO, and SBN are all related, but I dont think the satellite had anything on it.

I think the monster was just hibernating, and the satellite (which I think was dropped by TIDO) woke it up. It sees that its food (SBN) is being taken by Tag, and in fear for its habitat goes crazy. It's young, like they said, so it goes searching for a new home and new food, and ends up in NY, confused and scared and GODDAMN ITCHY FROM THOSE LITTLE BITEY THINGS. Ooh, pretty building to scratch on!

    *shrug*

    ReplyDelete
  87. i follow you all the way to the point of the worry of extinction. It is an intelligent critter, the first thing it attacked was the Tag. Ship. It knows what it is doing, it has cognitive thought. Just something else to think about.

    ReplyDelete
  88. And chris you also have to understand that J.J. and co didn't just draw a picture and say this is how i want my monster to look. They would have looked into it and seen how such a creature could biologically work, be more efficient, and make it as real as possible. I'm sure they expected many people, such as inx's friend, to scrutinize and pick apart how such a creature could function. It seemed obvious that one of the major points of this movie was to make it as real as possible and to seem as if it was a documantary. I'm sure many many unimaginable hours were put into research and coming up with this monster.

    ReplyDelete
  89. So people are now posting videos of the monster, so if you'd like to critque the two you can go onto youtube. I was just watching the ending scene where hud is looking up at him. He still looks pretty large.

    ReplyDelete
  90. It is an intelligent critter, the first thing it attacked was the Tag. Ship. It knows what it is doing, it has cognitive thought. Just something else to think about.

It attacked the Tag ship because it could smell the load of SBN in it. It's trying to get at the food and destroys the ship.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Even if it couldn't smell the SBN in the tanker, or if there WAS no SBN in the tanker, it was THERE and IN THE WAY.

"What is that thing, I wonder? Can I eat it? No, not in the slightest!"

Intelligent creature or not, it doesnt need to have a vendetta against tagruato to do what it did.

  92. Wow paramount seems to really be on top of things. I favorited a whole bunch of videos from youtube and websites that showed clips of the monsters and theyve all been suspended or taken down.

it was an OIL TANKER...hence the giant EXPLOSION.

  97. Just to follow up on the whole alien thing cos its bugging me....

firstly abrahams (or however its spelt) has said several times that although Clovie is a juvenile he has been in the ocean for thousands of years giving him a massively long life cycle. so he isnt new from that night, and isn't technically an alien any more.

With regards to his development, scientifically there are only so many ways an animal can develop regardless of what planet its from. There are requirements for life ie. water, food, certain gasses/minerals. and if it was an alien in order for it to survive in our atmosphere (bearing in mind that its amphbian to have survived so long in the water) it would need a biological system that would meet these needs.

Even if the creature came from a larger planet with higher gravity it would not actually grow anywhere near the same size as it would on that planet, as its muscles would not need to be as large to fight against our gravity.

  99. Ok heres something i think...when Marlena exploded, i think that was only her stomach, because you see her body expanding, which could be her stomach expanding and exploding because if it was her whole body exploding there would have been much more blood splattering..and remember that soldier that was dragged in that had no stomach? he could have been bit and the same thing happened to him..

  100. I'm not a whale expert, but those spikes on it sure doesn't look like a whale.

I think it's part of the monster.

    ReplyDelete
  101. I agree with opinions that it's a sea creature (most probably whales) killed by the monster. It's definitely a creature from our world.

The question now is... do u think there'll be a sequel, probably this time from the viewpoint of the government/military/intelligence (just like independence day/armageddon etc) where you can actually see what happened before, during and after (i.e answers), of which remained mysterious and unanswered in the movie Cloverfield. In this movie, there might be scenes where the new main actors simply brush shoulders with rob/hud etc., and go on with their own missions.

I think if J.J does that, it will be just awesome!

    ReplyDelete
  102. take a closer look...the thing on the right with the claw...that's the monster! if you recall from the movie ,the monster's legs didn't really have feet, they just came to a point. if you look at the claw shaped part of the carcass on the right, it resembles the legs of the beast. so they are either the front or hind legs of the cloverfield monster. from the way this looks, at some point the beast was blown to pieces, and we are looking at it's remains.

    ReplyDelete
  103. I was wondering if "Clovie" is an alien or a sea creature. If it's from the ocean, wouldn't it have to limbs adapted to the water? Usually amphibious creatures have webbed appendages and such, but Clovie didn't look like he had anything like that. I don't know, but it just didn't seem like it was from the ocean even though it should be right?

Also, as for the sequel, I was thinking of it last night. The movie states "case designate Cloverfield." Well, what if that only meant that Rob's video was one of several documentaries about the event? So Rob's documentary was called Cloverfield while other videos they found would be designated different names. I might be looking too into this, but I thought it might make sense. I know the name of the movie was just a fake name to be used, but what if it's part of several movies? Does that even make sense? haha

    ReplyDelete
  104. Actually Matt Reeves said that if they make a sequel that it will most like be a movie of the same attack on New York, only from the perspective of a different set of people. So basically the same thing and all shaky but with different people and different events. Then we'd have a set of parallel movies that overlap one another. Can you imagine if in the sequel they had the actors make a couple cameos. So like this new set of people are running and all of a sudden you see Rob, Marlena, Lily, and Hud with the camera run by and dive into a grocery store. That would be sweet.

  105. higgins said...it was an OIL TANKER...hence the giant EXPLOSION.

The picture of on 1-18-08.com shows the boat there burning in the ocean the next morning. If it had caused that explosion i dont think it would still be there.

Also, If we assume the tanker was Tagruato it probably didnt have oil in it. Remember the whistleblower said that there was no oil at the chai site.

  107. Hey Guys, I just saw the movie and I believe i have a halfway decent idea on what the monster is based on.

Now, JJ has stated that he wanted to make a monster that would be "America's Monster".

Now during the end of the movie, while the credits were rolling, i said to my brother "Hey bro, that was one lanky monster" He replied "yeah it was sort of like a monkey" SHAZAM!!!!!

    I think I made a connection here.
get ready for this, and it my be a huge spoiler if i'm right so watch out.

the monster is either based off of, or is

    a

    SEAMONKEY!!!!!!!!

and no, not the real ones, the fake ones.

Remember bake in the 70's and 80's there was that big "Sea Monkey" Marketing craze? well, if you look at the box art, you can draw some similarties.

    http://drake.marin.k12.ca.us/stuwork/rockwater/Salt%20&%20Water%20inside%20the%20Body/sea%20monkey.jpg

    http://thoughtmenagerie.files.wordpress.com/2006/10/WindowsLiveWriter/SeaMonkeysTheComicsLied_9AB1/seamonkey%5B2%5D.jpg

I know this might be a long shot, but I really do believe that the monster design was based off of the SeaMonkey concept. What really inspired this idea of mine was my brothers coment, the fact that the Uber Monster had a Tail that looks reminiscient of the sea monkey tale and that it comes from the freaking OCEAN!

If anyone can find a better pick of the box art of sea monkeys, please post it here.

I hope i dont have lion fever of the part of the eyes.

  108. An interesting point I thought I would make. I seem to remember reading something while I was looking through the different websites. It said something about the drilling company having deep sea excavators. They talked about clearing the ocean floor and building right there.

I was thinking about the people fleeing the oil rig as it went down. They didn't seem like oil rig workers.

My thoughts are that they did build something on the ocean floor, but it didn't have anything to do with oil. Instead, I think that they had a genetics lab down there. The floating oil rig was probably just a cover as well as a surface access point to the facilities below.

  109. One thing that strikes me as odd, when the first explosion occurs, all the lights in the city go off for a short period. That is consistent with a nuclear explosion.

Could a nuclear explosion occured underwater? Thus creating this odd monster. Perhaps a Nuke underwater trying to kill it.

    ReplyDelete
  110. A nuke did not create the monster. Matt Reeves (the director) said the monster has been under water for thousands of years but is just a baby, confused and disoriented. Imagine how old these things can get, or even how big considering the monster is thousands of years old and still a baby.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Ok... a Slusho shirt and a Tagruato logo on the ship does not tye it into the the backstory.
I loved this movie, but it had nothing to do with the backstory as presented.
I have been coming to this site since Transformers so I have seen all of the myspace and youtube stuff. My sister has seen none of this, but we both enjoyed the movie. I wanted more back story!
I just hope the viral internet stuff is on the DVD

    ReplyDelete
  112. I don't get people sometimes and how they ignore precious details. There is obviously more than one creature, and this creature on the beach is one of them, killed by the navy or it was killed by another one of its own, the bite mark looks as if it had a gigantic bite taken out of it and now blown out of it but who knows. All I know is that no sea creature other than the monster we know has a giant talon or spikes all over it, in fact the piece in the distance looks like its tail, those are the 4 fins that were on the back of it if you pay attention in the movie you can see them. Its tail can wrap all the way around itself. It's just a rotting corpse that finally washed onto shore. Also the monster has feet, it uses and there are other ones not as large, the Central park monster looked a lot smaller than the one that was carpet bombed, and I posted this info on the latest trivia comments.

    ReplyDelete
  113. Did anyone notice that after leaving the http://www.1-18-08.com/ page open for about 5 minutes, you hear about a 5 second long roar from the beast?

That definitely signals a sequel for me. The beast is alive!

    ReplyDelete
  114. paulinho, i dont want to come across as mean, but its been that since this all started just about, at least five months ago. that roar has always happened six minutes after going there. not exactly evidence for a sequel, most likely tho there will be, reeves has expressed interest in continuing the story of case designate project cloverfield.

    ReplyDelete
  115. Yeah, so those be the corpes' of sperm whales.
The one on the left for sure, just no top of the head for it. And the one on the right, probably the same thing.

    ReplyDelete
  116. At first I thought the thing in the middle of the screen was a claw, too, but it's not. I'm pretty sure it is a whale fin.

I'm having a hard time seeing the what on the left, though. Are those teeth by the fin, and an open mouth? Oh!, I think i see it now. it's body is going out toward the water, the thing sticking into the air is the fin, and the big bit is out of the head, which for a sperm whale is way in front of the mouth.

And with regard to the other comment about why they monster would eat people in the street if it already had a whale snack, sometimes monsters and animals kill to eat, and sometimes they kill to kill. It didn't seem to eat Hud, ya know.

    ReplyDelete
  117. personally, i dont see a "whale" on the top left. i mean, i see the bite wound, but to the right and bottom right of whatever it is, they look like horns.

im at work and cant really Photoshop edit this pic to better view it.

i should also state that there are no whales in NYC.

    ReplyDelete
  118. Good call on the no whales in NYC but this could of washed up on the shore of Connecticut or where ever the Tagruato oil rig was located, but then again that is really far off shore too, so this could be the Connecticut coast. It doesn't say on the back.

    ReplyDelete
  119. thats a good point. it *could* have washed up in CT, but thats doubtful.

    ReplyDelete
  120. Hey everyone. I havn't been able to read this whole page yet so I'm not sure if this was mentioned. At the end of the movie when the tape goes back to April 27 and the camera is focused on the water for a few seconds before Beth and Rob are shown on the Wonder Wheel if you focus your eyes on the top right of the screen you will clearly see something hit the water. It resembles some sort of capsule that landed in the water coming somewhere from the sky. I saw the movie twice the first time i missed it but the second time i caught it . Could it be that the monster came form space? Just curious if anyone else has seen it and what they thing about it. Thanks

    ReplyDelete
  121. first of all, those are whale carcasses and apparently my friend said he saw this image in the movie sometime before the subway or something like that.

secondly, wat does tag and the sea bed nectar have to do with this movie and wat are they! I didnt see any reference to them in the movie at all!!

And thirdly, when the spider things bite u, i think they put an other creature that groes in u because u see the body of the guy tore open AND EVERYBODY IN THE "HOSPITAL" WHERE SCARED AS HELL WHEN THEY NEW MARLENA WAS BITEN.

    just my 2 cents

    ReplyDelete
  122. One possible theory im just throwing out there (ive no real opinion as of yet on the monsters) is that the satelitte/pod thing that fell to earth at the end of the film contained the spider-parasites which are so bugging Clover.

The satelitte lands in the sea hitting ancient yet young sea-monster Clover, irritating the hell out of him. He is clearly imperveable to normal weapons so the parasites can lay endless eggs in him which hatch and fall to the ground without killing him.

Crazed by his new parasites Clover goes on a rampage. If there is just one of him in the movie then he is not being systematic at all but seems to be running around confused and irritated.

    ReplyDelete
  123. the previous post has some great opinions and i somewhat agree.
